Ajit Singh, grew up in a small village in Punjab, India studied in a convent school and spent most of his childhood working on his family farm. In 2006 Ajit came to Australia. During his settlement in Australia, Ajit faced many challenges including learning a new language, experiences of racism and cultural shock. He has a great passion for supporting communities living in multicultural societies to live harmoniously and finding common grounds. Hence is started the Oorja Foundation along with other passionate young Australians to support and empower community in Australia.
Ajit started his career in the welfare sector at the Youth Hub in the western suburbs of Melbourne. From 2006—2008 co-delivered many youth focused projects, including sports, music, arts and leadership courses. In his current role as the Youth Settlement Worker at Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre Ajit supports young people from refugee/migrant backgrounds in their settlement needs. Ajit is also currently member of Executive committee of Hume Interfaith Network. He was the Managing Director of Bhangra Down Under, Australia’s biggest Punjabi dance festival which provides a platform to more than 600 young people to practice their traditional customs.
Ajit has a keen interest in sports and believes that sports has always been a most successful tool in bringing people from different cultures, ethnicities and countries together under one roof to share something they all like. Resulting his passion towards sports he is supporting local migrant communities to engage with local sporting events, clubs and organisations. He has been nominated Community Ambassador for AFC Asian Cup 2015 Australia and Along with he is also Multicultural Ambassador for Melbourne Victory FC, AFL and Cricket Australia. He has been involved with running poetry workshops for young people from diverse faiths with Multicultural Arts Victoria. In his spare time, Ajit enjoys local music, attending poetry events, travelling, bushwalking and cooking fine Indian cuisines. He enjoys doing meditation and yoga in his free time.
